We are over the moon to see that about 62% of this year’s Sundance Film Festival’s Competition titles are directed or co-directed by women, and we are even more thrilled to see so many WMM filmmakers and program alum among them! Don’t miss these new films premiering at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival:
WMM-sponsored feature doc MIDWIVES (dir. Snow Hnin Ei Hlaing), which follows two midwives working side-by-side in a makeshift clinic in Myanmar, and THE COW THAT SANG A SONG ABOUT THE FUTURE (dir. Francisca Alegría), a narrative feature about our separation from Mother Earth and its current agony, will have its world premiere. WMM-sponsored short THE MARTHA MITCHELL EFFECT (dir. Anne Alvergue, co-dir. Debra McClutchy, prod. Beth Levison, Judith Mizrachy), an expose of an unlikely whistleblower during the Nixon presidency, will have its world premiere as well (fun fact: Judith Mizrachy is also a former WMM staff member – go Judith!).
Shalini Kantayya (CODED BIAS) will premiere her new film TIKTOK, BOOM., which looks at the controversy around the world’s most downloaded app. Paula Eiselt (93QUEEN) will have her world premiere of AFTERSHOCK, which looks at the U.S. maternal health crisis through the lens of two bereaved fathers turned activists following the preventable deaths of their partners due to childbirth complications.
JUST ANOTHER GIRL ON THE I.R.T., which was made with the support of our Production Assistance Program, is an early work of African American filmmaker Leslie Harris and will have a special screening and extended conversation. The film has been digitally restored in collaboration between Sundance Institute, UCLA Film & Television Archive, and the Academy Film Archive branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
WMM release ALL WATER HAS A PERFECT MEMORY (dir. Natalia Almada) will be playing as part of Sundance’s “From the Collection” Anniversary Shorts Program and will be available to stream as part of the festival’s virtual programming from January 20th – 30th.
WMM filmmakers and Production Assistance Program alums are also premiering new projects at the 2022 Festival! Congratulations to Cheryl Dunye (GREETINGS FROM AFRICA), Heather Rae (SHIMASANI), Lena Dunham (SHARP STICK), Sara Dosa (FIRE OF LOVE), Sabrina Schmidt Gordon (TO THE END), Sara Archambault (RIOTSVILLE, USA), Rory Kennedy (DOWNFALL: THE CASE AGAINST BOEING), and Sara Driver (STRANGER THAN ROTTERDAM WITH SARA DRIVER).
The festival runs January 20th through January 30th, 2022. To purchase tickets or view the full program, click here.
Congratulations to all, we can’t wait to see your latest projects!
