We are so pleased to see that four out of the five nominees for this year’s NAACP Image Award in Outstanding Documentary Film are made by WMM filmmakers! The nominees include WMM release CODED BIAS (Dir. Shalini Kantayya), WMM-sponsored MR. SOUL! (Dir. Melissa Haizlip), and new films from WMM program alums JOHN LEWIS: GOOD TROUBLE (Dawn Porter) and ALL IN: THE FIGHT FOR DEMOCRACY (Liz Garbus).
For more than 45 years, Women Make Movies has helped elevate the work of emerging and diverse women filmmakers. As the past year has focused mainstream attention on racism, we have been energized by the way Black leaders and Black-led organizations are working for political change. We are proud to work alongside this long-haul effort, as our feminism is inextricable from our longstanding commitment to racial equity.
We believe the film industry must truly represent the full diversity of our world, and these nominations underscore the importance of our mission to help women build long-term, sustainable careers in the documentary field.
The 52nd NAACP Image Awards will air live on BET on Saturday, March 27 at 8/7c. Good luck to our filmmakers!
