STATELESS is a gripping documentary that traces the impact of state-sanctioned racism in the Dominican Republic. In 2013, the country’s Supreme Court retroactively stripped citizenship from anyone with Haitian parents dating back to 1929, rendering over 200,000 people stateless. The film follows Rosa Iris, a courageous young attorney, as she mounts a grassroots campaign to challenge electoral corruption and advocate for social justice. Through hidden-camera footage and elements of magical realism, filmmaker Michèle Stephenson reveals the chilling consequences of institutionalized oppression and racism. At a time when extremist ideologies are on the rise globally, STATELESS is a powerful warning about the dangers of racial discrimination within government systems.
