The American Library Association (ALA) Film and Media Round Table has announced its 2022 Notable Films for Adults and three of the twelve films are WMM films! This year’s list of films calls attention to recent releases that made a significant contribution to the world of film and was selected from among thirty-three nominees.
The list includes WMM releases:
- BELLY OF THE BEAST (dir. Erika Cohn, prod. Angela Tucker), an Emmy Award-winning film which exposes a pattern of illegal sterilizations, modern-day eugenics, and reproductive injustices in a California’s women prison. This film helped bring reparations to survivors of forced sterilizations in 2021. The film is available to purchase, book for screenings, or watch on Kanopy.
- SISTERS RISING (dir. Willow O’Feral and Brad Heck), which profiles six women fighting to restore personal and tribal sovereignty against the backdrop of an ongoing legacy of violent colonization. The film is available to purchase, book for screenings, or watch on Docuseek.
WMM-sponsored MR. SOUL! (dir. Melissa Haizlip, Sam Pollard) was also selected for this year’s Notable Films. This inspiring film follows the groundbreaking PBS television program “Soul!” and its pioneering creator Ellis Haizlip. Airing in the wake of the Civil Rights Movement, “Soul!” was revolutionary era programming that from 1969 until 1973 depicted Black artistry and life in a way not yet seen on television.
Congratulations to our filmmakers!
