We’re thrilled to announce that four films from the WMM Production Assistance Program will premiere or screen at the renowned Venice International Film Festival this year. This selection showcases diverse narratives and powerful stories, highlighting the incredible work of filmmakers from around the world. Here’s a look at some of the films:
FAMILIAR TOUCH (United States) | Orizzonti Horizons Competition
Director: Sarah Friedland
FAMILIAR TOUCH is a coming-of-(old)-age film that reimagines the genre to illuminate the experience of an older woman. This thought-provoking film explores the tensions between care and independence, intimacy and labor, and desire and self-identity. Sarah Friedland’s unique perspective brings a fresh and nuanced take on the complexities of aging.
APOCALYPSE IN THE TROPICS (Brazil)
Director: Petra Costa | Producers: Leda Stopazzolli
APOCALYPSE IN THE TROPICS is a cautionary tale about the rise of religious fundamentalism in Brazil. The film delves into the concept of the Apocalypse, exploring it through theological lenses. As the narrative unfolds, we follow ministers, doctors, indigenous leaders, and slum-dwellers, revealing a nation divided by a Holy War. Petra Costa’s compelling storytelling offers a gripping portrayal of a society at a crossroads.
SONGS OF SLOW BURNING EARTH (Ukraine)
Director: Olha Zhurba | Producers: Darya Bassel
SONGS OF SLOW BURNING EARTH portrays a collective portrait of Ukrainians facing the challenges of war. The film captures the resilience and adaptability of those who stayed behind, living under constant shelling, and those who fled, seeking safety. Olha Zhurba’s evocative storytelling offers a poignant exploration of life amidst conflict.
