We’re excited to share that five WMM-supported films and program alum will be screening at the 62nd New York Film Festival, including two from our Production Assistance Program:
- BALLAD OF SUZANNE CÉSAIRE (dir. Madeleine Hunt-Ehrlich) – A beautiful art film about the intellectual, philosophical and emotional imprint left by Martinican anti-colonialist writer and Afro-surrealist pioneer Suzanne Césaire.
- APOCALYPSE IN THE TROPICS (dir. Petra Costa) – A follow-up to her Oscar-nominated THE EDGE OF DEMOCRACY (which was also made with the support of WMM’s Production Assistance Program), tracks the chilling rise of the far right in Brazil.
2 films from Production Assistance Program alum are also screening. UNION, directed by Production Assistance alum Brett Story, captures the complexities of labor movements and collective action, highlighting the struggles of workers fighting for their rights in a changing world. DAHOMEY, directed by Production Assistance alum Mati Diop, explores the return of royal treasures of the Kingdom of Dahomey to Benin, sparking a debate on heritage and identity among university students. The festival will also feature the premiere of the restoration of COMPENSATION by WMM filmmaker Zeinabu Davis (CYCLES, A POWERFUL THANG, MOTHER OF THE RIVER), a beautifully restored classic that explores love and communication between a deaf Black couple across two different time periods.
Congratulations to all the filmmakers! The 62nd New York Film Festival will take place from September 27 to October 13, 2024.
