About this Event
Have you ever wanted to use archival material or a clip from the news or a TV show in your film, but aren’t sure about what rights you need? Would you like to better understand what does and does not constitute Fair Use – your right to use unlicensed copyrighted material in reasonable amounts for new purposes? WMM will be hosting a special webinar with the top experts on the subject: American University Professor and founder of the Center for Social Media & Impact Patricia Aufderheide and legal expert Peter Jaszi, the people who literally wrote the original book on Fair Use, Reclaiming Fair Use: How to Put Balance Back in Copyright.
Aufderheide and Jaszi will draw on their years of experience advising documentary filmmakers and other creative professionals to lay out in detail how the principles of Fair Use can be employed to avoid copyright violation. Taking stock of the vibrant remix culture that has only burgeoned since their original study, they will address exactly what has historically been meant by Fair Use and the expanded reach of what it means now. They will also explain the new CASE Act which creates a new venue for copyright disputes up to $30,000.
This webinar will unpack how and even why to claim Fair Use – and the steps you’ll need to take to do it. In addition, we’ll let you know about various law clinics across the country that could take on your project for a fair use assessment.
To Fair Use or Not to Fair Use is an essential webinar for filmmakers and creators, who are finding themselves in an ever-broadening realm of old and new media.
A discounted price of $15 is available to WMM Production Assistance Program and Distribution Filmmakers as well as members of WMM Partner Groups. Enter your promo code when selecting your ticket type.
***If you are unable to participate live, a recording of this webinar will be emailed to all registrants and available for three months after the recording is posted.
