This powerful documentary follows Ella’s quest to find others who share her rare disability, short femurs, and no hip joints. Having never seen anyone with a body like hers, Ella embarks on a global journey for kinship and connection, challenging societal ableism and showcasing her unwavering optimism and resilience.
The film also delves into Ella’s unexpected pregnancy, providing a poignant exploration of being disabled and pregnant. Through candid video diary entries, hospital appointments, and interviews, Ella offers an intimate look at her life and the emotional process of becoming a mother. Home video footage from her childhood adds a nostalgic layer to the narrative, enriching the viewer’s understanding of her journey.
IS THERE ANYBODY OUT THERE? had its World Premiere at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, its UK Premiere at the Sheffield DocFest, and its NY Premiere at DOCNYC. It had its broadcast premiere on PBS’s POV on July 8. It has won several awards, including the FIPRESCI Prize for International Documentary and the Silver Horn Award for Best Film on Social Issues at the Krakow Film Festival, and the Emerging Documentary Jury Award at the Milwaukee Film Festival. Additionally, Ella Glendining received the NYWIFT Award for Excellence in Directing.
