WMM filmmaker Jane Campion has won an Academy Award for Best Director for her latest film, THE POWER OF THE DOG. She is the first woman to receive two Oscar nominations for Best Director and the third woman director to win an Oscar.
As many of you may have already heard, Women Make Movies and the independent film community suffered a huge loss this past week. Michelle Materre, the Chair of the WMM Board, former staff member and long time supporter of the organization passed away.
WMM release BARBARA LEE: SPEAKING TRUTH TO POWER won the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Documentary! WMM filmmaker Geeta Gandbhir (dir. LOVE THE SINNER) and Program alum Yoruba Richen were also recognized at the NAACP Image Awards, winning Outstanding Directing in a Documentary for their work on HBO’s BLACK AND MISSING.
Two new acquisitions from WMM – APART (dir. Jennifer Redfearn) and FANNIE LOU HAMER’S AMERICA (dir. Joy Davenport, prod. Monica Land) – will premiere on PBS the week of February 21!
The American Library Association (ALA) Film and Media Round Table has announced its 2022 Notable Films for Adults and three of the twelve films are WMM films! This year’s list of films calls attention to recent releases that made a significant contribution to the world of film and was selected from among thirty-three nominees.
