Friends in L.A., mark your calendars for a special opportunity to watch two films by renowned, longtime Women Make Movies filmmaker Trinh T. Minh-ha.
On Saturday night, December 14 at 7:30 PM, Minh-ha’s first feature film Naked Spaces – Living Is Round (1985), which has long been distributed by Women Make Movies and was recently restored by the Academy Film Archive, will have its North American restoration premiere at the Tedd Mann Theater at the Academy Museum. Minh-ha will be in attendance at this momentous event.
And then on Sunday, December 15 at 7 PM, don’t miss the special opportunity to experience the critically acclaimed WMM release WHAT ABOUT CHINA? (dir. Trinh T. Minh-ha) at LA Film Forum. This special screening will feature an in-person conversation with Trinh T. Minh-ha following the film. Tickets are free for Film Forum members.
WHAT ABOUT CHINA? reimagines documentary storytelling by blending archival footage, oral histories, poetry, and folk songs to examine cultural identity and collective memory. Shot in rural China in the 1990s, the film delves into the themes of harmony, history, and displacement amidst the “Great Uprooting,” offering audiences a profound and thought-provoking cinematic experience.
Shot with stunning elegance and clarity, NAKED SPACES explores the rhythm and ritual of life in the rural environments of six West African countries (Mauritania, Mali, Burkino Faso, Togo, Benin and Senegal). The nonlinear structure of NAKED SPACES challenges the traditions of ethnographic filmmaking, while sensuous sights and sounds lead the viewer on a poetic journey to the most inaccessible parts of the African continent: the private interaction of people in their living spaces.
Trinh T. Minh-ha, a trailblazer in feminist and postcolonial cinema, invites audiences to challenge traditional narratives through her deeply philosophical exploration of culture and identity. The film has garnered numerous accolades, including the New Vision Award at CPH:DOX and the Golden Gate Persistence of Vision Award at the San Francisco International Film Festival.
Don’t miss these two important events. For more details and tickets, visit the LA Film Forum website or at the Academy Museum.
