Four WMM Classics to Screen at the Museum of the Moving Image

We’re thrilled to announce that four classic Women Make Movies films will be featured Sept. 20-29 at the Museum of the Moving Image as part of “Personal Belongings: First Person Documentary in the 1990s,” a series curated by Jeff Reichert and Asha Phelps. These screenings offer a rare opportunity to experience these iconic films on the big screen.

HALVING THE BONES (dir. Ruth Ozeki)  Sunday, September 22, 1:15 p.m.

Ruth Ozeki’s HALVING THE BONES is a deeply personal and reflective documentary exploring family, memory, and cultural identity. As Ozeki travels between Japan and the United States, she delves into her family’s past, grappling with generational legacies and the ties that bind. This screening will be paired with BANANA SPLIT (25 STORIES) by Kip Fulbeck, adding another layer of exploration into the Asian American experience.

COMPLAINTS OF A DUTIFUL DAUGHTER (dir. Deborah Hoffman)  Sunday, September 22, 6:00 p.m.

Deborah Hoffman’s COMPLAINTS OF A DUTIFUL DAUGHTER, nominated for an Academy Award for Best Feature Documentary, is a poignant and humorous exploration of the relationship between a mother and daughter as they navigate the challenges of Alzheimer’s disease. Through personal reflections and candid moments, Hoffman paints a moving portrait of love and caregiving. This screening will be accompanied by SINK OR SWIM, with director Su Friedrich attending in person, offering an intimate look at family dynamics.

Janice Tanaka’s WHO’S GOING TO PAY FOR THESE DONUTS, ANYWAY? is a deeply personal exploration of family, identity, and reconciliation.
