We are excited to share that three films from both WMM programs have been nominated for the 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards. Each year, the Spirit Awards brings together top talent from throughout the world of film and television to honor independent film.
Our newest acquisition BYE BYE TIBERIAS (dir. Lina Soualem) – read the announcement in Deadline! – and WMM-sponsored GOING TO MARS: THE NIKKI GIOVANNI PROJECT (dir. Michèle Stephenson, Joe Brewster) are both up for the Best Documentary category. BYE BYE TIBERIAS is also Palestine’s entry for Best International Feature in the Oscars, and both films are also qualified for Best Documentary in the 2024 Academy Awards.
WMM-sponsored JOONAM (dir. Sierra Urich) is one of three films nominated for the Film Independent Spirit’s Truer Than Fiction Award, which is presented to an emerging factor of non-fiction features. WMM filmmakers and alum have won this award for the past two years, with Jessica Beshir (dir. WMM-sponsored FAYA DAYI) winning in 2022 and program alum Reid Davenport winning in 2023.
