WMM release BARBARA LEE: SPEAKING TRUTH TO POWER won the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Documentary! From Peabody award-winning filmmaker Abby Ginzberg (dir. WAGING CHANGE), the film is an intimate and inspiring portrait of U.S. Representative Barbara Lee, a champion of civil rights and the lone vote in opposition of the broad authorization of military force following the September 11th attacks. The film was up against Oscar-nominated films SUMMER OF SOUL (…OR, WHEN THE REVOLUTION COULD NOT BE TELEVISED) (dir. Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson) and ATTICA (dir. Stanley Nelson), as well as MY NAME IS PAULI MURRAY (dir. Julie Cohen, Betsy West) and TINA (dir. Daniel Lindsay, T.J. Martin).
WMM filmmaker Geeta Gandbhir (dir. LOVE THE SINNER) and Program alum Yoruba Richen were also recognized at the NAACP Image Awards, winning Outstanding Directing in a Documentary for their work on HBO’s BLACK AND MISSING, a four-part docuseries that raises awareness for Black missing persons cases that are marginalized by law enforcement and the media.
