The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the shortlist for the 97th Oscars, and we are thrilled to celebrate the recognition of SUGARCANE (dir. Julian Brave NoiseCat and Emily Kassie), made with the support of WMM’s Production Assistance Program. Shortlisted for Best Documentary Feature, this powerful and timely film investigates the abuse, forced separation, and assimilation of Indigenous children at a residential school in Canada and illuminates the ongoing pursuit of truth and intergenerational healing.
Two films by WMM program alumni are also on the shortlist for Best Documentary Feature: UNION (dir. Brett Story, Stephen Maing); and DAHOMEY (dir. Mati Diop). And on the shortlist for Best Documentary Short is SEAT 31: ZOOEY ZEPHYR, directed by Kimberly Reed, whose forthcoming feature THE GENDER PROJECT is currently being supported by WMM’s Production Assistance Program.
The 97th Oscars nominations will be announced on Friday, January 17, 2025. The ceremony will take place on March 2, 2025. Congratulations to all the filmmakers for this well-deserved recognition!
