Helena Solberg
Ms. Solberg is an award winning filmmaker who was born and raised in Brazil; there she directed and produced many short dramatic and documentary films. She has been living and working in the United States for many years, and has concentrated most of her films on Latin America and issues involved in the relationship between the US and Latin America. Ms. Solberg has examined both social and political realities and women's issues in her films The Emerging Woman (official film of the American Bicentennial Commission, American Film Festival Blue Ribbon); The Double Day, which was released at the Mexico International Women's Year conference in 1975 (Recommendation of the Jury, Mannheim Film Festival); and Simplemente Jenny (1977 American Film Festival Blue Ribbon Award).
In 1981 Ms. Solberg produced and directed From the Ashes... Nicaragua Today about the Nicaraguan revolution and reconstruction, seen through the lives of a peasant family (National Emmy Award; Chicago Film Festival-Silver Hugo Award; Best Documentary- produced and directed several other films: 1982: The Brazilian Connection: 1983: Chile By Reason or By Force: 1986: Home of the Brave (Blue Ribbon Award, American Film Festival: Honorable Mention, Global Village Film Festival); 1986: Portrait of a Terrorist: 1987: Made in Brazil, and in 1990: The Forbidden Land (Bronze Apple Award, National Educational Film Festival). She was also the Executive Producer of Caffe Lena a performance documentary made for PBS and the BBC.
